Our history and sustainable commitment
We are a German-Ecuadorian couple on a mission to connect traditional Andean crafts with Europe through “alterNativo.” During a trip to Ecuador, we met families who make hand-woven rugs and ponchos with dedication and respect, products that reflect the soul of Andean culture.
With “alterNativo,” we promote conscious consumption: handmade and sustainable art instead of mass production. Our name combines “alternative” and “native,” highlighting that true alternatives arise by preserving traditions and supporting artisans.
Otavalo is situated between majestic volcanoes in the Andes, a region known not only for its stunning landscapes, but also for its rich craftsmanship. In the indigenous Kichwa language, Otavalo means “Cobija de todos,” a “blanket for everyone.” This name reflects not only warmth and protection, but also the sense of community and the deeply rooted culture of the people who live here.
The region's craftsmanship dates back to pre-colonial times, and with "alterNativo" we seek to preserve these traditions while connecting people around the world with the beauty and authenticity of these creations. Our mission is to promote these centuries-old techniques, give a voice to the artisans of Otavalo, and build bridges between the Andes and Europe.
Each handmade blanket, rug, and poncho tells a story: of the volcanoes, the traditions, and the hearts of those who created them.
